According to the Kentucky Department of Tourism, Kentucky was the site of America’s first commercial vineyard, planted in 1798 by the winemaker for the Marquis de Lafayette.

By the late 1800’s Kentucky was the third largest grape and wine producer in the United States. Prohibition hit the regions wine industry as it did in many other American states. Vineyards were either uprooted and converted to cash crops or abandoned throughout the state.

Although Kentucky has not caught up to other wine producing areas, more than a dozen commercial wineries have taken root, primarily in the fertile central bluegrass region, but also in the northern and eastern parts of the state. The wine industry is being renewed at a remarkable rate. One day soon Kentucky wines may be as sought after as fine Kentucky Bourbon.

There are already many Kentucky wineries where visitors can enjoy wine tours and tastings and you can look forward to more cropping up every year.

Equus Run Vineyards

Nestled amidst picturesque stone fences and rolling fields of bluegrass, in the quaint town of Midway, Kentucky is a surprising place to find a world-class winery. It all started with a passion for something traditional in a non-traditional place. An inspired vision to work the rich fertile soil of the Kentucky Bluegrass in a county steeped with tradition, a tobacco and cattle farm gave way to what is now Equus Run Vineyards. The vision became reality in January 1998.

Equus Run offers the Official Commemorative Wines of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and is also the proud silver medal winner of the 2010 KY Derby Wine Festival.

Talon Winery

Located at historic Fair View Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Stroll through their lush vineyard and uniquely inviting tasting room and gift shop located in the original 18th century farmhouse. Talon’s five-acre vineyard sits on 300 acres of rolling farmland with many ponds, red roofed barns, and pleasant breezes. Meet their winemaker and be a part of the winemaking process, from vine to bottle. Visit the private tasting room.

Medal winner at the International Eastern Wine Competition

Visitors to “Bourbon Country” are often pleasantly surprised to find a number of vineyards tucked away in the picturesque settings of the state’s bluegrass countryside. A visit to a Kentucky winery offers a wonderful romantic experience, featuring wine tastings, festivals/events and tours.
